How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Indian Skin: SPF, PA+ and Skin Type

Why sunscreen matters every day
UV exposure is the biggest preventable cause of premature ageing, dark spots and uneven tone. India sees high UV levels for most of the year, so daily protection is the single most effective step you can take for healthier-looking skin.
Decoding SPF and PA+
SPF measures protection against UVB — the rays that cause burning. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 about 98%. For everyday Indian sun, SPF 30 to 50 is a sensible range.
PA+ rates protection against UVA — the rays linked to tanning and ageing. More plus signs mean more UVA defence, so look for PA+++ or PA++++ for strong, broad-spectrum cover.
Match the formula to your skin type
- Oily or acne-prone: lightweight gel or matte-finish sunscreens that feel weightless and won't clog pores.
- Dry: cream or hydrating lotion formulas with added moisturisers.
- Sensitive: mineral (zinc oxide) sunscreens tend to be gentle and less likely to sting.
- Deeper skin tones: tinted or invisible-finish sunscreens help avoid the white cast some formulas leave behind.
How to apply it right
Most people use too little. Apply about two finger-lengths for the face and neck as the final step of your morning routine, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours when you're outdoors or sweating.
